This conference is the third international symposium organized by the Hubert Curien Maghreb Program “DESERT: the Southern border of the Maghreb in Antiquity and Middle Ages, space of boundaries and territory of exchanges” (Multi-year program of Casa de Velázquez).
After having questioned, during the previous conferences, the border and its forms, then the specificities of the predesert societies in the north of Africa and the Sahara, between Antiquity and the Middle Ages, this meeting aims to give a new look on the circulation and exchanges involving the north of the Sahara until modern times.
It proposes to combine the contribution of archaeology with the rereading of the written data, in order to renew the approaches to trans-Saharan relationships.
