Mediterranean economies in the late Middle Ages (1300-1500):
Crises, reconstruction and restructuring

The Ecomed programme is funded by the ANR for five years (2024-2028) and is supported by the Casa de Velázquez and the École française de Rome. It aims to study the structures of the economy in the Mediterranean basin (Latin West, Muslim world, Byzantine world) during the second half of the 14th century and the 15th century, i.e. from the first Black Death epidemic to the beginnings of the economic recovery. Bringing together 41 full researchers from French, Italian and Spanish teams, it aims to address an issue that has received little coverage in recent historiography, which has been dominated by historiographies centred on Northern Europe. However, the tools developed for this area are proving inadequate in part for understanding the countries of the Mediterranean basin, fragmented between Latin, Islamic and Byzantine powers. Indeed, there are specific features in all areas. They affect the climate, the environment, the role of epidemics and famines, the organisation of agricultural and craft production, the evolution of settlements, the role of war, the economic policies of states and the reactions of societies. In short, all the compartments of economic history are concerned. Ecomed plans to study them afresh, taking as its subject the Mediterranean as a whole, considered as an area evolving autonomously in relation to Northern Europe. The divergence between North and South, on the one hand, and between East and West, on the other, is a question that needs to be explored in greater depth.
