Presentation

The doctoral workshop is organized as part of the scientific collaboration between the German Archaeological Institute and the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (Casa de Velázquez) in Madrid. This year marks the twelfth edition of the workshop, which has become a tradition of international renown. The workshop offers young investigators a forum for open, critical and constructive dialog and discussion. The theme of this session focuses on methods and techniques of archaeological documentation, from the collection of data to storing and disseminating the data.

While traditional techniques of archaeological documentation like hand drawings remain of vital importance, the rapid technological development is revolutionizing the way archaeological remains are documented: from the use of drones and of advanced geophysical methods to digital 3D documentation and the methods of microbiology, genetics, and archaeometry. A profound knowledge of these methods and techniques, their possibilities and their limitations, is becoming ever more essential. They offer the opportunity to develop new lines of research, and at the same time increase the responsibility of the archaeologist in dealing with archaeological heritage.

The theme of the European Cultural Heritage Year (ECHY) 2018 is “Sharing Heritage.” In this vain the workshop addresses the question of how archaeological vestiges are documented and preserved, whether they are artefacts and biofacts on an excavation and whether they are documents produced as part of archaeological research (drawings, photographs, digital models, GIS data etc.). In destroying the object of his research to a greater or lesser degree, the archaeologist in the field and in the laboratory has a great responsibility, in collecting the maximum of data, storing the data and making it accessible to the scientific community.

The presentation of the workshop is intentionally open in order to promote an interdisciplinary and diachronic dialogue. Selected thematic fields are varied:

• The development of archaeological documentation, its diversity, its comparability and its use;
• Differences in scale, from the carbonized seeds to entire landscapes, from the microscopic analysis to the satellite image;
• The contribution of hard sciences and the use of new archaeological databases;
• The creation, storage and publication of archaeological data, including databases;
• Tools of analysis and interpretation, such as spatial modelling, virtual 3D reconstructions, static and animated simulations etc.
• Restauration, reconstruction and presentation of archaeological monuments and artefacts.

The purpose of this workshop is to foster a scientific and methodological reflection on these themes. The workshop is especially dedicated to doctoral students in history, archaeology, architecture and physical and natural sciences, from universities and research centers in Europe and Maghreb, whose thesis is relevant to the themes of the workshop.

In addition, through a multidisciplinary approach, it aims to create an area for exchanges, experiences and analysis of the investigation practices in many different geographical contexts. Each participant will have the opportunity to become actively involved in a dialogue by presenting aspects of his or her doctoral thesis and participating in discussions, together with experts of international renown.

The workshop will take place alternately at the Deutsches Archaologisches Institut, and at the Casa de Velázquez. Partcipants will have the opportunity to visit the archive of the DAI and the Museo de los Orígenes de Madrid.
