Presentation

The workshop is carried out within the benchmark scientific collaboration between the German Archaeological Institute of Madrid (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Madrid) and the School of Higher Education in Hispanic and Iberian Studies (École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques, Madrid). These workshops have become a tradition of international reach. Due to the situation derived from the international pandemic we were not able to get together neither in 2020 nor 2021, but we do trust that this year we will be able to celebrate the 14th Edition of the Doctoral Workshop in Archaeology.

The objective of the workshop is to create a forum ideal for doctoral candidates where we can generate open, critical and constructive dialogue.

The main topic of the 2022 workshop is centred around climate change and its repercussions on ancient societies and their environment. This topic, a current issue today, has certain influence on historical thought, which integrates different questions regarding climate change and historic, cultural, social and political changes, as well as different aspects of individual and collective life. The interdisciplinary methods of archaeology also play a part in the renovation of the thought process. Geological, geographic, archaeobotanical, archaeozoological or anthropological analysis, together with historical and archaeological studies offer the possibility of detecting the factors and multiple consequences derived from climate change: displacements or population reduction, changes in food consumption, or illnesses and deaths, all of which can be directly and indirectly derived from climate change. Natural catastrophes (floods, droughts, storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, pandemics…) leave different traces which can be contextualized and dated thanks to archaeology and the archaeological method.

Different topics will be addressed during the workshop, such as:

  • The creation of a dialogue between natural sciences and archaeology.

  • The identification and documentation of climate change and paleoenvironmental in archaeological contexts and ancient environments.

  • The repercussion of climate change in cultural, societal and demographic development.

  • Changes in climate and the environment in ancient sources.

  • Climate change and the development of new archaeologies (arctic, desertic, glacier, high mountain, coast lines.

  • Climate change and cultural heritage

The workshop´s intention is to generate a scientific and methodological debate mainly destined to doctoral candidates in Archaeology, Ancient History, Architecture, and Physical and Natural Sciences in relation to Humanities, who belong to either universities or research centres throughout all of Europe and the Maghreb. The objective is to create a space for exchanging experiences and analysing different practices and methodologies from other research traditions.

Therefore, each participant will have the opportunity to actively participate in the exchange of information, presenting their own research in relation with the central theme of the workshop, contributing their own point of view to the collective reflection with the input from mentors of international renown.

Sessions will take place alternately at both venues: the Casa de Velázquez and at the German Archaeological Institute.

15 doctoral candidates chosen from the applicants based on the quality of their doctoral thesis will participate in the workshop. Renowned researchers will participate in the workshop as tutors. These tutors will represent different disciplines: Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Late Antiquity and Medieval Archaeology, Geoarchaeology, Geology, Archaeobotany, Dendrochronology and Anthropology, lending their expertise and experiences in their respective fields to the workshop:
